If you’re looking for the latest wireless shifting tech but don't want to drop $1,500 on a full SRAM or Shimano group, you’ve probably come across WHEELTOP. I’ve been testing their latest gravel-specific 1X system, the EDS GeX, and I have to say—it might have changed my mind about the wireless revolution.

WHEELTOP isn't just another random online brand; they’ve been an OE manufacturer for major cycling brands for a decade. The EDS GeX is their most recent addition, specifically for gravel. For $600, you get shifters, a wireless rear derailleur, and hydraulic brakes. The biggest selling point? It’s brand-agnostic and compatible with anything from 3 to 14 speeds. I’m running a 93mm long-cage derailleur with a massive 51T mountain bike cassette, and it handles that gear range perfectly.

The setup process was a bit of a rollercoaster. The hydraulic brakes were a breeze to install—they use mineral oil and felt firm immediately. However, the derailleur indexing was frustrating at first, mostly because I didn't follow the manual properly. My advice: read the manual! The app is also a bit clunky with some weird translations, but once you find the 'Debug' menu and set your cassette size, it works. Since getting it dialed in, the performance has been flawless—reliable shifting, no dropped chains, and no missed shifts over my test rides.

There are some trade-offs. The battery isn't removable, which might be a deal-breaker for some, and the app takes a minute to learn. But with a claimed 20,000 shifts per charge and the ability to swap between drop-bar and flat-bar shifters using the same derailleur, this is an incredible value for riders who love versatility. If you want high-end tech without the high-end price, the EDS GeX is definitely worth a look.
