How to Replace WHEELTOP EDS GeX Shifter Batteries: Easy CR2032 Wireless Shifting Maintenance

Today, we're tackling the very first bit of maintenance on my Wheeltop EDS GeX wireless shifting setup after using it for about a year and a half: replacing the shifter batteries! Up until now, it’s been working great with no issues during casual riding. However, when I pulled the bike down for a ride recently, I noticed that pressing the shifter button lit up RED instead of the usual GREEN, indicating low battery. To double-check, I connected the shifters to the Wheeltop app on my phone, which showed the voltages were down to around 2.69V on the right shifter and 2.66V on the left. Since brand-new CR2032 coin cell batteries should read around 3.1V out of the box, these were pretty drained. While I probably could have squeezed a little more time out of them, I definitely don't want to deal with loose shifting or getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere, so swapping them out is the best way to go.

The process turned out to be ridiculously easy! To get started, all you have to do is peel back the top of the rubber hood grip, and you'll find the battery compartment cap right on top of the shifter body. You can actually use one of your coin cell batteries as a tool to fit into the slot on the cap, turn it to unlock, and pop the cover off (just make sure the rubber O-ring stays properly seated in place for weather sealing). Then, take a small pick or precision screwdriver, insert it into the removal slot next to the cell, and pop out the old battery. Drop in a fresh CR2032 battery, align the cover, twist it locked using a coin, and fold the hood grip back into place. As soon as I pressed the shift button again, the LED turned a bright GREEN! I repeated the exact same simple steps for the other side, and now both shifters are fully powered and set for at least another year and a half of riding.
