Installation Guide

Check the cassette, size the chain, then route it correctly through the rear derailleur. Getting these right is what makes a new chain run smooth and quiet from the first ride.

Before You Start: Check the Cassette

Always check the cassette for wear before fitting a new chain. If the teeth are badly worn (sharp, hooked or leaning to one side), replace the cassette together with the chain. A new chain on a worn cassette will not mesh properly and can skip or slip under load, which affects riding safety.

If the chain skips while riding, check the cassette first: light wear beds in after some riding, while heavy wear means the cassette needs replacing.

Step 1 · Check the Chain Length

A new chain is supplied long enough for normal bikes. If your bike has an unusual frame, confirm the link count before cutting. Use any one of these three methods:

Method 1

Match Your Old Chain

Lay the new chain next to the old one and cut it at the same length, as marked by the dashed line.

Method 2

Largest Chainring + Largest Cog, Plus 2 Links

Wrap the chain around the largest chainring and the largest cog, without running it through the rear derailleur. Where the ends meet, add 2 links and cut there.

Method 3

Derailleur Cage at 90°

With the chain on the largest chainring and the smallest cog, the rear derailleur cage should hang straight down, at 90° to the ground.

Step 2 · Route the Chain Correctly Through the Rear Derailleur

The rear derailleur cage has a chain-retaining pin (shaded gray below) that stops the chain from coming off. When threading the chain through the rear derailleur, thread it through the cage on the guard-plate side, exactly as in the correct picture. If the chain is not routed correctly, it can rub and catch, and may damage the chain or the rear derailleur.

Chain Care

The chain is a key part of the drivetrain, and how well it is looked after directly affects shifting and service life. Keep up with these four things:

Clean the chain

Lubricate the chain

Check and adjust the chain tension

Check the chain and sprockets for wear

Buyer Notes

Match the Speed to Your Drivetrain

Choose the 11-speed chain for an 11-speed cassette and shifting system, and the 12-speed chain for a 12-speed one.

Size the Chain to Your Bike

The chain is supplied at full length (11-speed: 116 links; 12-speed: 126 links). Trim it to suit your chainring, cassette and frame using a chain tool during installation.
