The Ultimate Upgrade for Old Rim Brake Road Bikes: Wheeltop EDS TX Wireless Electronic Groupset In-depth Review & Installation Guide

Welcome back, lovely bunch! Today, we’re giving my daughter’s road bike an "epic" upgrade. Currently, it’s running a traditional 10-speed Shimano Tiagra mechanical groupset with heavy shifting and messy cables. The Wheeltop EDS TX we’re installing is, as far as I know, the only wireless electronic groupset specifically offering a rim brake version.
Installation & First Impressions: I was blown away the moment I opened the box—there's carbon fiber everywhere on the shifters and derailleurs; it’s a beautiful piece of kit. The set includes shifters, a front mech, and a rear derailleur. I kept the original crankset to keep things simple. The installation was much faster than expected because, without gear cables, I only had to manage the brake lines. I had a small hiccup where I had to swap the left and right brakes to suit my daughter's preference, but the internal design of the shifters made swapping cables incredibly easy.
App Tuning & Performance: The soul of the Wheeltop system is its app compatibility. I can customize the number of gears on my phone (even for this older 10-speed setup). The setup involved a bit of "random science"—using the "Fine Gear Tuning" feature in the app to assign specific values to each gear. After some trial and error, the shifting became incredibly smooth. From gear 1 to 10, there was no lag, no chain drops, and no clicking noises.
Core Advantages: What I love most is how electronic shifting solves the issue of the massive lever sweep on mechanical shifters. For riders with smaller hands, they no longer have to push the whole lever with their hand; a single finger tap is all it takes. Plus, at around €450, it’s significantly cheaper than anything from SRAM or Shimano!
If you have an old rim brake bike sitting around and want to modernize it, the Wheeltop EDS TX is definitely worth looking at. It looks awesome, performs reliably, and most importantly, makes riding much more effortless and fun.
