WHEELTOP EDS TX Installation Guide & Troubleshooting: Giant Defy Electronic Shifting Setup

Welcome back to the workshop! Today, we have a Giant Defy on the stand for a major upgrade: installing the WHEELTOP EDS TX electronic groupset. This was a challenging project, especially with modern integrated cable routing, but the results are well worth the effort.

Starting with the components, the EDS TX carbon levers feel incredibly premium, and the textured grip is a smart addition. One of the handiest features is the charging system—the magnetic cable with a USB-C adapter allows you to charge the derailleurs directly from your phone! The brake calipers are impressive too; unlike Shimano’s two-piece design, these are CNC-machined from a single block of aluminum, providing a very direct and firm feel.

The installation got a bit tricky when it came to the front derailleur. On this specific Giant Defy frame, the front derailleur sat too low and hit the frame. I had to wait weeks for a special FSA offset adapter to raise it by about 3mm to get the alignment perfect. Once that was sorted, the WHEELTOP app made the indexing process smooth. You can set it from 3 to 14 speeds, and I highly recommend using the 'Racing Mode' for faster shifts. I also reconfigured the shifter buttons so the bottom button downshifts (for sprints), which feels more intuitive. We swapped the stock pads for Shimano pads to match the rotors, and used Shimano BH90 hoses and mineral oil, as they are fully compatible. The final weight of the bike came in at 8.225kg , making it a sleek, modern, and high-performance machine.
