Will It Work with an 11-40? WHEELTOP Cassette and Frame Compatibility

An 11-40, a 10-tooth small cog, an older rim-brake frame, or a UDH hanger: what the published WHEELTOP limits actually are, and what is still unconfirmed.

Most compatibility questions are about the largest cog, the speed count, or an older frame. The limits below are the published ones. The wider WHEELTOP EDS compatibility guide sits next to this page. Product pages: EDS TX, EDS GeX, EDS OX 2.0.

Quick table: max cog by model

ModelLargest cog
EDS TX36T
EDS GeX, 75 mm cage42T
EDS GeX, 93 mm cage52T
EDS OX 2.0, 58 mm cage32T
EDS OX 2.0, 75 mm cage42T
EDS OX 2.0, 93 mm cage52T

That is why an 11-40 cassette is not a match for the EDS TX. The TX’s largest cog is 36T, and 40T is past it. A rider on an 11-36 reported that combination working, which sits inside the 36T limit. The GeX and OX 2.0 long cage is rated to 52T, not 51T.

Published ranges start at a 10T small cog (TX 10–36T, GeX 10–42T or 10–52T, OX 2.0 10–32T, 10–42T or 10–52T). We don’t have a separate warning that a 10T cog misbehaves.

Speed is set in the app, not fixed in hardware

You choose the speed count in the WHEELTOP app. It is not a fixed 11-speed or 12-speed derailleur. GeX and OX 2.0 are published as 3–14 speed. On the TX, set the app to the cassette you fitted. The product page lists that kit as 7–14 speed.

Using a SRAM 12-speed cassette

Set the app to 12-speed. Don’t look for a SRAM brand name in Flywheel settings. The list is Shimano speeds. Then run initial calibration on the smallest cog.

If the middle cogs skip or will not settle, fit a Shimano cassette. It matches this derailleur more closely. We don’t have a published reason beyond that. After the swap, set the matching Shimano speed, calibrate again on the smallest cog, and fine-tune gear by gear.

Older rim-brake road bikes

The EDS TX rim-brake levers pull your existing rim-brake calipers with a standard cable. Those calipers are not in the kit, unless you bought a big kit that includes them. A 2x small kit is not split up for sale, and the front derailleur is not removed from that kit. On a 1x bike you simply don’t fit the front derailleur. The left and right levers can both be set to run the rear derailleur when no front derailleur is installed.

Hangers, UDH and old one-piece dropouts

The hanger has to be straight and needs a step for the derailleur tab. On OX 2.0 and GeX, a UDH frame is officially “partially compatible.” The derailleur bolts to the UDH hanger. It is not a direct-mount derailleur, and you don’t need an adapter for a standard UDH hanger. After the chain is on, shift to the smallest cog and check by hand. A small number of frames can rub there. Don’t treat it as unconditionally direct-mount.

If the dropout is one piece and has no step, you can still add a derailleur hanger adapter (an extender). The derailleur mounts on the adapter, and the tab sits on the adapter’s step.

Chains

A CHOHO chain is compatible with GeX, OX 2.0, and the standard cages on TX and TT, both the alloy cage and the standard carbon cage. It is not compatible with the TX ceramic oversized pulley cage. The chain rides up on those pulley teeth.

A SRAM Flattop chain on a WHEELTOP derailleur is not confirmed. Campagnolo compatibility is not confirmed either. Email support@aoeagle.com before you buy either of those combinations. We won’t guess.

Disc version notes

On the EDS TX disc kit, the calipers are flat mount only, not post mount. The hose insert and olive are the Shimano BH90 size. The mounts we supply are for a 160 mm rotor only. The kit does not include rotors. GeX disc brakes are also flat mount, for 160 mm rotors.

Setup of the gears themselves is in the calibration guide.
