Electronic Shifting for Beginners: How Wireless Groupsets Work

A plain-English guide to wireless electronic shifting: how it works, what you maintain, and how to pick a WHEELTOP EDS model.

Quick answer: in a wireless electronic groupset, the shifter sends a radio signal and a motor in the derailleur moves the chain. There are no shift cables to stretch or re-index. You charge the derailleurs, replace a coin cell in the shifters occasionally, and adjust everything in an app.

How Wireless Electronic Shifting Works

  • Shifters run on a CR2032 coin cell and send the shift command wirelessly.
  • Derailleurs have a built-in rechargeable battery and a motor. WHEELTOP EDS rear derailleurs use an 800mAh 7.4V (5.92Wh) battery; the TX front derailleur uses 500mAh 7.4V (3.7Wh).
  • The app (WHEELTOP app v2) handles pairing, calibration, per-gear fine-tuning, speed count, Standard / Racing mode and firmware updates.

Charging and Battery

WHEELTOP rates the rear derailleur at 20,000+ shifts per charge. Charging uses a Pogopin magnetic connector. The app shows battery level. More in the battery life guide.

Weather Sealing

WHEELTOP EDS derailleurs are IP67 rated (dust-tight, 1m submersion for 30 minutes). Shift levers are IP65. Rain riding is fine; avoid pressure washers.

FAQ

Do I need to re-index electronic shifting?

No cable means no cable stretch. If a gear drifts after a wheel or cassette change, fine-tune that gear in the app.

What happens if the battery runs out?

The derailleur needs charging before it shifts again, so check battery level in the app before long rides.

Can I ride in the rain?

Yes. Derailleurs are IP67 and shift levers IP65.
